“Standards and Metrology” and “Telecommunications” Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Develop the Information Technology Sector

Ramallah – The Minister of National Economy and Chairman of the Standards and Metrology Institute, Khaled Al-Asili, and the Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology, Ishaq Sider, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today, Sunday, as part of joint integration programs under the theme "Jerusalem, Digital Capital 2023."
The MoU aims to develop and enhance the achievements of the information technology sector and implement the national strategy for strengthening this vital field.
The agreement outlines cooperation in the establishment of laboratories, whereby the Standards and Metrology Institute will provide the necessary guidance for setting up and accrediting telecommunications equipment testing labs within the Ministry. The two sides will also collaborate in implementing the requirements for the accreditation of such laboratories, in accordance with recognized accreditation bodies.
In terms of product conformity, both parties agreed to exchange conformity certificates for approved devices issued by each party, according to a mechanism that ensures seamless operation. They will also cooperate in conformity assessment procedures for telecommunications devices and other electronic equipment using radio frequencies, including chargers.
Regarding calibration services, the Institute will provide calibration for the Ministry’s devices and equipment. In turn, the Ministry of Telecommunications will require telecom and IT companies to calibrate their equipment through the Standards and Metrology Institute.
Minister Al-Asili emphasized the importance of cooperation and coordination with government entities to benefit from the Institute’s technical activities, which play a critical and valuable role in developing the national economy, protecting consumers, and enhancing the competitiveness of Palestinian products. He confirmed continued collaboration with the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology in initiatives that contribute to economic growth in Palestine.
Minister Sider highlighted the importance of intergovernmental cooperation through such memoranda, noting that they translate visions and goals into tangible results for the benefit of Palestinian citizens. He also emphasized the value of experience-sharing between government institutions through joint meetings, training sessions, and workshops.
Director General of the Standards and Metrology Institute, Haidar Hajjeh, noted that under the MoU, the parties will collaborate in the areas of training and information exchange. This includes sharing data on standards and organizing joint field visits to observe each party's technical procedures.
